Transportation Hub

Located in central Charleston, South Carolina, this transit hub is inspired by the grand train terminals in Europe and North America and the existing linear rail structures adjacent to the site.  It is comprised of two main volumes separated by an open arcade that acts as a circulation spine for the hub.  As is the case with the grand train terminals a double height great hall and a vehicle shed are intimately linked.  The main hall is accessed from the rail platform and spine adjacent to the bus shed through pivoting doors that remain open during operating hours for the passive cooling effects of cross breezes.  An open bus shed which is activated by a covered green space provides an alternative to typically dreary bus depots.  The pitched roofs channels water to storage tanks for use in restrooms and for vegetation.  Vertical fins are located at openings on the façade to prevent excessive heat gain and to diffuse light.   Bike storage is placed in the great hall for accessibility.
